NDG Linux Unhatched is it the best way to get into Linux
Why I did it
So I recently finished this NDG Linux Unhatched an intro course presented by CISCO Networking Academy in collaboration with NDG and thought giving my opinion about it. 1st of all this course is for beginner-level Linux users. But that doesn’t stop you from doing it although you are an intermediate or professional level Linux user. For me, the main reason to do this course is I found that I am losing my ability to do even the simple things (I mean changing the permission level of a file, moving, copying, renaming a file, filtering an input, basic network configurations and things similar like these) and I found myself searching for commands through the internet when I need to do this kind of a thing which is quite frustrating. After completing this course I found that it is much easier to get my things done through Linux (currently I am using Linux MINT MATE) and although I still have to find specific things through the internet.
So what will NDG Linux Unhatched cover for you
· What is Linux and why is it important to learn
· Basic Linux commands and syntax
· Basic Arguments & options
· Working with Linux Directory
· Working with Linux files
· Access and permissions levels in Linux
· File management (ownership, permissions, viewing, copying, moving, removing)
· Basic Input filtering
· Regular expressions and patterns
· Shutting down Linux
· Basic network configurations
· Overview of Linux processes
· Package Management
· Updating user passwords
· Using text editors in Linux
You will get access to a Linux VM (Ubuntu) to try to test all the commands and things you learn. Another advantage is you can interact with this VM through the browser so there is no need to set up a VM of your own to work with.
I know the basic, what else
Well, you might be the person who is already got your hands dirty with Linux and you may already know most of the content offered through NDG Linux Unhatched. So if you are a person like this, I suggest you take a look at the NDG Linux Essentials which also a course offered by CISCO Networking Academy in collaboration with NDG and covers a whole lot of content on a much deeper level. Also, that course leads you to the LPI Linux Essentials Professional Development Certificate (PDC).
I am a beginner and want to get familiar with Linux, but time matters for me
So you are new to Linux and you want to start fast, if you are this kind of person, then NDG Linux Unhatched is the course for you. You not only get the base level knowledge of Linux but can also work on it from day one as you learn. Well, there are some pros and cons to this path.
Pros
· You get a good understanding of how Linux works and you know to do basic things in Linux without searching for each and every command on the internet.
· Know how to interact with a Linux VM and the command line (CLI)
· Get that decision whether Linux is for you or not.
Cons
· You still have to learn to do intermediate & advanced level stuff.
· If time is not a big problem, there are better options you can start with to explore Linux.
· As this is not professional certification you may have to prove skills to recruiters in face of an interview.
Final verdict
NDG Linux Unhatched is a basic intro-level course that gives a glimpse of Linux and there is a whole lot more for you to explore if you are into Linux. From my point of view, it is a great place to start your journey in Linux. The reason I am telling this is if you jump straight into a course like NDG Linux Essentials you will be overwhelmed with content you have to learn if you are a beginner. But NDG Linux Unhatched is a sweet spot where you can decide whether you are into this or not. Also, you don’t have to regret thinking this as a waste of your time because the estimated time (8 hours to be approximate) is quite sufficient and it is completely FREE.
